- Exterior - The exterior of the hotel is a classic example of Georgian Adam architecture.
- General - With its refurbishment complete, and with its prime location, this hotel is now one of the most sought-after 4-star hotels in Edinburgh. November 1999
- Lobby - The reception area is quite large and traditional.
- Location - This hotel is situated in Charlotte Square, located in Edinburgh's new town. The hotel closed in 1998 to be completely refurbished at a cost of 12 million pounds and re-opened in 1999 as a prestigious 4-star property.
- Restaurant - The restaurant has been completely re-styled and is now welcoming and airy. The melrose room serves lighter bar meals.
- Rooms - The new rooms are all of excellent quality and furnished tastefully. The bathrooms are all in excellent condition.
